Board of Directors
Sam Leishear, President
Just a little background for those of you new here. My wife, Ann-Marie and I have been married 17 years and have lived here in Stella Maris since 2009. I am a retired dentist, avid fisherman and RVer. We come from the Eastern Shore of Maryland, originally being from DC and Philadelphia. I also am a retired Air Force Lt. Col in the Dental Corp with 27 years’ experience, mostly as a reservist. I served 3 three-year terms as an elected city councilman in our small town of Pocomoke City Maryland. I presently serve on the CID here as one of the five supervisors. I was president of the BOD of SMMHOA from 2016-2019 when we redid the roofs and repainted our community.
Joe Sullivan, Secretary
I’m from a very small town of less than 1000 people in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. I have four brothers and a sister spread out across the country. My father died in a car accident at the age of 33 leaving my mother at the age of 29 to raise the six of us that spanned in age from 10 years old to 6 months; I was nine. I later realized that whatever challenges I would face in life would pale in comparison to the adversity that my mother overcame. We grew up poor, but I’m proud to say that all of my siblings have been quite successful.
I got my start by joining the Army as a Military Police Officer in 1976. I then joined Brinks Armored Car where I served in their Engineering department in Atlanta and then managed their Boston Operations.
Following 7 years with Brinks, I initiated a long career in the LTL (Less than Truckload) and Small Package Industry culminating with my recent retirement from DHL Express in September of 2020 after nearly 24 years there. At DHL, I held the highest engineering position within the Americas and was a member of the Americas Senior Management Team and Global Engineering Leadership Team. I managed a team that was responsible for Infrastructure Engineering (Buildings and Equipment) for over 400 facilities that spanned Canada, the US, Mexico, Central & So America and the Caribbean. I was responsible for the regional capital budget, business cases and standardized project management for up to 75 projects annually. Those projects included building expansions, relocations and fully automated greenfield and LEED sorting facilities. I also managed Innovation (robotics) and Environmental Engineering efforts at the Americas level and held a key lead role in a massive US operations restructure initiative.
My career had stops in Minneapolis, Atlanta, Boston, Cincinnati and Plantation FL (twice). It was while I was in Boston that I met my far better half, my wife Lorraine, who was working for Johnson & Johnson at the time. We’ve been married 32 years now and have a daughter, Christine in MA, a son, Shawn living on the south east coast of FL and two grandchildren. Lorraine and I just sold our SE FL home in Coral Springs and are enjoying retirement and living full time with our friends in the beautiful Port of the Islands.
Theo Treuren, Vice President
Theo Treuren was born and raised in The Hague in the Netherlands. He sailed 9 years for the Merchant Marine until meeting his wife Sherry, who was an American passenger aboard the Nieuw Amsterdam where he served as Officer’s Mate for the Holland America line.
In 1976 the Treurens immigrated to the United States where Theo began a career in construction. He worked in the capacity of Project Manager for several years for a Canadian developer building condominiums in Palm Beach and Jupiter, Florida. He became a Florida state certified General Contractor and built spec homes for a few years after which he joined his father-in-law’s engineering company in the capacity of building inspector.
When the construction industry collapsed in the nineties, he reinvented himself and became a Florida-certified pest control operator. He currently owns 50% of Home & Garden Pest Control, Inc. which he started in 1995. He holds state licenses for GHP (General Household Pest and Rodent Control), L&O (Lawn and Ornamental Pest Control), and Termite and Other Wood-Destroying Organisms Control.
Theo & Sherry purchased their villa in Port of the Islands in 2004 and Theo has served on the Landscape Committee off and on.
Floyd Gillespie, Treasurer
Floyd and Ann bought in Stella Maris, May 2017....just in time to experience the power of Hurricane IRMA.
They met in high school and as they say “the rest is history.” Both graduated from Michigan State University and will celebrate their 49th anniversary this August.
Floyd‘s major was Criminal Justice and upon graduating was employed in Federal Law Enforcement as a Postal Inspector.
He investigated mail fraud, mail theft, robberies, burglaries, and drugs through the mail.
Floyd worked with Secret Service, DEA, FBI, IRS and local law enforcement. Cases were presented to the US Attorney in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia). Floyd retired in 2003 with 30+ years.
In Community Service, Floyd is active with his church in Pennsylvania and served on the Deacon Board for two terms, the second term as Chairman.
Being new to SWFL and Port of the Islands Ann and Floyd enjoy the water and boating. Floyd hopes to help SSMHOA in any way possible.
